"Through the Night"

I would just like to clarify something: There are about 1,001 babycare books that tell hapless and overtired moms that infants can sleep "through the night" when they are 2-6 months old. Some even quote statistics to prove that your child is the only one not sleeping through the night yet.

What they don't tell you in boldface, what's hidden in the fifth chapter under the smudge, is that they define sleeping "through the night" as a 5-6 hour stretch between the beginning of one feeding and the beginning of the next. That translates into about 4.5 hours for the mom, if she's lucky. And since Aaron has chosen to make that stretch 7pm-12midnight, I don't call that sleeping through the night.

Just for the record.

  1. Amen. I agree.

All of my babies slept "through the night" between 2-3 months. Jacob is the only one who appeared to meet the adult definition at that age, and he was still living with his foster mom at that time. He was a reliable all-night sleeper when he came home to me at 7.5 months, so I was really spoiled with him.

Harper appears to be an easier sleeper than Ellis, who wasn't bad at this age. But still, if Harper sleeps from 7-11, she will be up at least once between 11p-6a.

However, she is definitely reliable enough that I rarely feel tired these days. I hope Aaron evens out soon!! Hang in there!!

  2. I feel you... Maggie slept from 8pm to 7am while we were letting her sleep in her cradle swing. But, she can't sleep in that forever. This week we began the transition to her crib upstairs and she woke up about 4 times last night. I am so tired I can't see straight!

One RN told me that after the "back to sleep" campaign babies rarely sleep more than 6 hours at a time because they sleep less soundly on their back, which is the point of the SIDS prevention tip.

I am just keeping focused on my one year old niece, who reliably naps 2-3 hours per day at the same time of day and sleeps 12 hours at night. I figure by age 1 I can look forward to a full night's sleep. That way I won't be disappointed if it takes that long!
