Watch Out for Nerds

I am not a doctor. I've never wanted to be a doctor, but yesterday I was reminded again that I'm not even close:

1) After several days of fussiness and restless sleep, I was convinced Aaron must have an ear infection, so I took him to our pediatrician only to be told he's perfectly healthy. Teething, but healthy.

2) While there, I mentioned that Noah--who I thought was perfectly healthy--has a couple little spots on his skin that the doc might as well check out. Turns out the spots--which I thought were just dry patches--may actually be an infection so he prescribed a cream.

3) That afternoon when I was changing Noah's diaper, I was alarmed to see that his poop was red. RED. I hadn't served him any red food lately. But blood would be black, right? I actually found his dirty diaper from the night before to confirm that it was not red. So why the sudden change? I had visions of some strange side effect from his rash - or an internal illness - or food allergy?

I paged Josh before calling our pediatrician. Good decision. Turns out Daddy had given Noah a box of red Nerds candy after dinner the night before. I can just see me hauling Noah into the ER for "red poop!" only to be told his "terrible internal illness" had come in his Easter basket with one other side effect: a sugar high.
